Typical projects

Four model projects show how the methodology turns into practical solutions: how many logger positions, which tests, what is usually found and what is done about it. The figures illustrate typical situations and do not refer to specific clients.

These are model examples based on typical situations. Our clients’ actual reports are confidential; on request, we can show an anonymized sample report. Completed projects with figures and client letters are published as we receive our clients’ consent.

Distributor warehouse, 900 m²

ParameterValue
Facilitywarehouse 45 × 20 m, racking up to 6 m, +15…+25 °C
Grid per the EEC guideline4 × 3 × 3 = 36 data loggers
Additionaltwo dock doors, 2 air conditioners, outdoor: 5
Total41 data loggers, 10 min interval
StudiesJuly (8 days), January (8 days)

Typical findings

  • In summer, the upper rack levels along the south wall warm up to +24…+25 °C in the afternoon, leaving less than 1 °C of margin to the limit.
  • In winter, the first two rack locations by the loading dock doors drop below +15 °C during peak dispatch.
  • The monitoring sensor mounted on a column in the center at a height of 1.5 m does not cover any of the problem zones.

Solutions

  • the rack locations by the doors are removed from the storage area and assigned to dispatch, for staging goods before shipment;
  • two monitoring sensors are relocated: to the top level by the south wall and to the bottom level by the doors;
  • an air curtain is added, along with a procedure for closing the doors between trucks;
  • the critical summer season is re-studied a year later.

Cold room, +2…+8 °C

ParameterValue
Facilitycold room 12 × 8 × 3 m, two evaporators, 2.6 m racking
Grid3 × 2 × 2 = 12 positions
Additionaldoor, 2 evaporators, outdoor: 4
Tests48 h steady state, 3 door openings of 60 s each, power failure
Interval2 min

Typical findings

  • The top shelf opposite the evaporator drops to +1.5…+2 °C after defrost, creating a risk of freezing.
  • By the door, the temperature stays at +8.5 °C for 4 minutes after an opening; recovery takes 11 minutes.
  • During a power failure, the first position exceeds +8 °C after 47 minutes.

Solutions

  • the top shelf opposite the evaporator is excluded for freeze-sensitive products;
  • a deflector screen is installed; a repeat 24-hour study confirmed +2.6 °C at the former cold spot;
  • a 10-minute delay is set for the high-temperature alarm, based on the recovery data;
  • emergency plan: 45 minutes to move the products.

−80 °C freezer

ParameterValue
Facilityupright ultra-low temperature freezer, 5 shelves
Positions9 external Pt1000 probes, loggers outside the freezer
Tests24 h steady state, 60 s door opening, power failure

Typical findings and solutions

  • The top shelf by the door is 4–6 °C warmer than the center; after an opening, recovery to −70 °C takes about 25 minutes, so the most valuable samples are moved to the middle shelves.
  • During a power failure, the time to reach −60 °C is about 4 hours when fully loaded and considerably shorter when half loaded, so the procedure now requires a backup freezer to be kept available.

Refrigerated semi-trailer

ParameterValue
Facility13.6 m semi-trailer, +2…+8 °C, 33 pallets
Positions13 in the cargo space + 1 outside, 1 min interval
Scenariospre-cooling, loaded trailer for 12 h, 6 stops with door openings, winter with −25 °C outside

Typical findings and solutions

  • Pallets placed tight against the front wall by the refrigeration unit are hit by the cold air stream and drop to +1.8 °C, so a clearance gap is introduced and the top row next to the unit is not used.
  • In winter, the bottom row by the rear doors drops to +2 °C during long stops, so the heating mode is enabled and door-opening time is limited.
  • The monitoring sensor is moved out of the supply air stream into the rear third of the trailer.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a sample report?

Yes, on request we will provide an anonymized sample mapping report.

How long does a warehouse project take?

For one season, usually 3–4 weeks from receiving the floor plan to delivering the report. The second season is scheduled for the opposite time of year.
